Birds on Tiles

Birds stand face to face or back to back on each side of the tree of life or sit on branches of the tree.  The tree of life sometimes resembles cypress or pine. The double headed eagle became the symbol for the Sultan.

Kubad Abad Palace was built in 1226-1236 on the southwest shores of Lake Beysehir.  It was built for the sultans and emirs and adorned with walls of tile mosaics.  Many of the tiles found are now displayed at the Karatay Madrasah in Konya, Turkey.  Star tiles were used with underglaze and lustre techniques.  Blue, turquoise, purple, dark blue, and black are used on a white background.
